In 1770, he joined, as a"cadet" the Berwick rgt, Cie of Michel Carroll (Irish Infantry in France service).

"The family of O’Madden have been many centurys settled in the province of Connaught, in Ireland ; especially in the county of Galway where they had a great landed property for antiquitys alliances and large tracts of land, they were eaqual to any of the ancien Milesian family of Ireland, but at this day, they are much reduced from their ancien state ; the reason to be assigned for this only is that they always stood up "  pro aris et focis ", for the Religion, King and Country, which was not ocation of the loys of their great landeed property, but also of their never haveing being dignified with any English titles of honours ; in latter times, there were several familys of the

O’Maddens, such as Killenihy now called Eyrecourt, Meelick, Derryhoran, Lismore,Killneboris, Ballyhone, all in the county of Galway ; The said Mr Butler O’Madden, gent. was the son of Murtaugh O’Madden, gent. who was the son of Denys O’Madden, gent.,who was the son of Murtaugh O’Madden, gent., of the house and family of Killenihy, now called Eyrecourt as afore said and in the possession of Lord Eyre, to which belonged a large part of land, this considerable estate was lost by the late mentioned Murtaugh O’Madden, the great grand father of Mr Butler O’Madden, in 1641, in Cromwell’s wars ; but ever since the lost of their estate this family embraced a military life in the services of the king of Spain, the queen of Hungary etc..and never did submit to live in a less distinguished state, though more lucrative. The priory of Meelick, of the order of Minorates and the convent of dominicans, in Portumna, both in the county of Galway and now in venerable ruins were built by the O’Maddens. Mr Butler O’Madden’s mother, mrs Catherine Butler was also well born, being releated to the family of Killcash, in Munster, which family was nearly releated to the Ormond family.

Whose names are here into suscribed do certie to all it doth , or may concern, that the above account of the family and extraction of Mr Butler O’Madden, late of Birr, in the Kings county, and now of the city of Nantes, in Britany, in France, is true and genuine
